THE FOUNDER STORY

From $1,000 and a PC to Building Across Five Continents

In 1997, I left a secure tech career in sales and marketing — armed with an Electronics and Telecommunications engineering degree, Rs 50,000 (roughly $1,000), a PC, and an internet connection — to launch Nastrac Group, a global executive search firm. Over the next 20 years, I grew Nastrac from that single room in India into a $20 million operation spanning six regions: USA, Singapore, India, UK, Finland, and the Middle East.

In 2017, I made a decision most founders would never make: I disrupted my own company. Running Nastrac for two decades taught me that the traditional recruitment process was broken — subjective, inefficient, and riddled with unconscious bias. So I built X0PA AI, an AI-powered hiring platform that now operates in 20+ countries. X0PA AI is the first HRTech company to have successfully implemented the AI Verify framework, demonstrating our commitment to transparency, fairness, accountability, and robustness in our AI solutions.

But building and scaling X0PA taught me something else — something I was not expecting.

The Problem Nobody Talks About

Running a SaaS company means living inside spreadsheets. Not just any spreadsheets — an ever-growing constellation of them. One for the deal pipeline. Another for commission calculations. A third for SaaS metrics — ARR, MRR, NRR, GRR, churn, LTV, CAC, payback period. Then the financial model for investors (which is always out of date by the time you present it). Another for customer success health scores. One more for invoice tracking. And the board deck — a quarterly ordeal that consumed three days of senior team time stitching numbers together from six different sources.

“I remember one particular month-end close that still makes me wince. We spent two full days pulling commission data, reconciling it against Stripe, cross-referencing with our CRM, and manually computing NRR. When we finally presented the numbers, a board member pointed out that our reported ARR did not match the figure from two slides earlier — because they were pulled from different spreadsheets at different times. That thirty-second moment of silence in the boardroom was the moment I decided this had to change.”

Commission disputes were another recurring headache. With sales reps across Singapore, India, and the UK closing deals in SGD, INR, and GBP — and commissions paid in USD — the manual currency conversions and split calculations were a constant source of errors. Every month, at least one rep would flag a discrepancy, and our finance team would spend hours tracing it back to a broken VLOOKUP formula or a stale exchange rate.

The worst part? We were a technology company. We built AI that processes millions of data points to make objective hiring decisions. And yet, our own revenue operations ran on the same fragile spreadsheets that every other SaaS company suffers through.
